This week we bring you the wonderful world of Capoeria; one of the only martial arts in my knowledge to have it's own set of music.
Capoiera has had a rocky history, at one point being outlawed by the Brazilian government for its association with crime. It was popularized by the legendary Mestre Bimba, but Capoeira has existed since the days of slavery in Brazil. Originally used as a form of communication amongst slaves it continued after the abolishment of slavery and began the process of transformation to what it is today.
Today, Capoeira has many styles, the most popular being that of Angola, a slower form of Capoeira played close to the ground. Capoeria Regional, the form popularized by Mestre Bimba is a faster paced game involving more acrobatic actions.
Capoeira, as stated earlier is accompanied by it's own music. The main instruments fundamental to Capoeira include the berimbau(percussion instrument responsible for the twangy sound of capoeira), atabaque(drum), and pandero(tambourine). Instrumentalists stand in the roda(circle)with other capeoristas. Two people play in the center and Capoeiristas have the option to "buy in" or cut one player out of the circle.
